To celebrate
the grand opening of the UNCLE BEN’S® Kids
Cafe at the
Boys & Girls Club in Carson, Mario Batali – celebrity chef,
cookbook author and restaurateur – made a special appearance on May
28th,
conducting a cooking lesson and serving food to the 100 children who
regularly use the facility. Batali, who is a long-time volunteer of
the Food Bank of New York City, supports UNCLE BEN’S® quest to raise
awareness about the 12 million children in the United States who are
hungry or at risk of going hungry.
The opening of the Kids Cafe in Carson is part of a
multi-year partnership with UNCLE BEN’S® and the Kids Cafe program
of America’s Second Harvest – The Nation’s Food Bank Network. Last
year UNCLE BEN’S® announced a $1 million donation to open Kids Cafe
locations in communities in which Mars, Inc. does business with a
purpose of providing free meals and snacks to low-income children.
Mars Food US, the parent company of UNCLE BEN’S®, is headquartered
in nearby Rancho Dominguez, CA.
In Los Angeles County there are over one
million children, seniors and working families at risk of going
hungry. As school lets out for the summer, many children who
received free school lunches are looking for food programs to help
them through the summer months.
